| I don't think America has lost yet, but I see it as another Vietnam. You can't tell were the enemy is, they use guerilla warfare, and they are relentless. Even if we win all the battles, they still don't stop. And we are doing the same thing as the Vietname War. We surge troops in, train the country we are allied with, then we rush out and let them handle it. Its like giving a kid a bike, helping him once, and then saying go play in traffic. | |

| The only reason NATO is losing is lack of commitment, 138,000 troops to cover somewhere nearly the size of Europe aint enough. In the Vietnam war, US used 6 divisions, NW Europe in WW2, roughly similar size area, 46 divisions. Iraq: equivalent of 4-5 divisions. Afghanistan, less than a brigade. Spot the difference. The US didnt lose in Vietnam militarily, it just looked like it. The Vietnamese have admitted since that their death rate exceeded the birth rate, so ultimately they would have had to stop fighting. They won the propaganda war very effectively though, and that is a major part of post 1945 conflicts.
There are half a million troops or more in NATO and they have struggled to field 20,000 troops. It's called fighting the war on the cheap. To effectively occupy a large country takes a lot of manpower, manning roadblock checkpoints everywhere, sealing the border, effective rapid response forces. It all takes a lot of manpower, much more than has been committed. Of course the political will is not there in any western country to do the necessary, and the results are there for us to see every day.
In the former Yugoslavia, the genocidal wars bertween Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians only ran down when all sides ran out of drunken warriors, then NATO intervened 4 years too late. In Iraq, the other side is a long way off running out of potential "warriors" yet, mainly 'cos they're coming across the borders from Syria and Iran. | |
